Just because an embroidery design is programmed for certain colors, doesn't mean you have to use those colors! There are inspirations of color all around us. If you like the colors of a tree in the park, snap a photo and upload it to sites like Pictaculous (http://www.pictaculous.com/) or CSS Drive (http://www.cssdrive.com/imagepalette/index.php). It will generate a color palette of multiple color swatches based on the photo you uploaded. Then, it's up to your imagination to make the colors flow in your piece.
I am always inspired by what other people have done. I love looking through the color inspirations blog for Urban Threads. My favorites so far are the Koi fish in reds (http://www.urbanthreads.com/blog/?p=11294), and the Sugar Plum Fairy wings in blues (http://www.urbanthreads.com/Gallery.aspx?pg=8#galleryID=UTG_0850). I too created a light blue version of the fairy wings for my niece on a zip up hoodie:
What will you create?
